Junior Pope: AGN states why filmmaker Adanma couldn’t be sued

The President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Mr. Emeka Rollas, has stated why the association could not sue filmmaker Adanma Luke, following the tragic death of actor John Paul Obumneme Odonwodo, popularly known as Junior Pope.

Junior Pope tragically lost his life in a boat accident on April 10, 2024 while coming back from the set of Adanma Luke’s movie titled: “Other Side of Life.”

As a result, Adanma was suspended on April 11 for violating established safety protocols.

Also, to ensure the safety and well-being of actors and crew members, the AGN implemented a ban on film productions involving riverine areas and boat riding, to prevent such tragic occurrence in the future.

The AGN, however, in August lifted the ban on Adanma.

According to the Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), Mr. Rollas during an interview with ARISE TV gave an explanation on the limitations around suing Adanma.

During an interview with ARISE TV, Mr Rollas explained the drawbacks of suing Adanma.

He said “so, I gave you guys an update on Junior Pope, and I mentioned we were about to sue. But our lawyer said the AGN can’t actually sue because of the contract Junior Pope signed. He said only his wife or family can proceed with suing the producer.”

“As part of our efforts to establish a robust structure, we initiated a licensing system for actors, following the discovery that Junior Pope, despite being a prominent actor, has not been paying his dues as a member of the guild since a year before his death.”

In addition, the president stressed the urgent need for reforms in Nigeria’s film industry, with a focus on implementing actor licensing and improving compensation structures.

Mr Rollas stated that the association is working hard to build a new structure that includes licensing actors to ensure a better financial security for actors.

“The organization will revisit its previously discussed structure, citing the need for changes after the recent trip to Los Angeles,” the president said.

Obstacles

Rollas highlighted the challenges faced by Nigerian actors, particularly the absence of robust financial systems and adequate compensation structures.

He stated, “I will be presenting my views from the standpoint of the AGN.

“The AGN notes with concern that despite the presence of major film production companies in Nigeria, the payment of royalties and residuals to actors is neglected.”

He emphasized that the absence of proper structures in the Nigerian film industry leaves actors vulnerable, particularly in cases where prominent actors face serious health issues.

“Notably, prominent actors who fall ill often receive no support, as their financial compensation from their work does not include royalties and residuals,” Rollas said.

“Normally, you need to be financially up-to-date to qualify for benefits.”

“By introducing a licensing system, we can ensure that actors in Nigeria meet certain standards, and in return, they will be eligible to receive the benefits and support they need.”
