Ohanaeze Ndigbo has renewed its call for the immediate release of detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a fresh statement from Enugu, the pan-Igbo socio-cultural group urged President Bola Tinubu to act decisively in the interest of justice and national unity.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the statement was issued by the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu.

He appealed to Tinubu to exercise his constitutional authority and diplomatic influence to secure Kanu’s release.

Ohanaeze argued that such action would reflect equity, fairness, and inclusive governance under the current administration.

Nnamdi Kanu was arrested in Kenya in June 2021 under controversial circumstances and was subsequently extradited to Nigeria.

He has now spent four years in detention without resolution of his legal battle.

Ohanaeze described his rendition as illegal and said it raised serious concerns about the legitimacy of his detention and trial.

The group emphasized that the continued incarceration of Kanu casts a shadow on Nigeria’s commitment to justice and constitutional values.

“The question of Nnamdi Kanu’s continued detention poses a moral burden on the corporate integrity of the Nigerian judicial system,” the statement read.

Ohanaeze warned that the international community is closely monitoring how the Nigerian government handles the situation.

They cautioned that delaying his release could further damage the credibility of the justice system and weaken reconciliation efforts with the South-East.

The group stressed that Kanu’s freedom would be a strategic step towards healing national divisions and rebuilding trust among marginalized regions.

According to the statement, releasing Kanu would not only calm tensions in the South-East but also demonstrate Tinubu’s willingness to pursue peace and inclusion.

They noted that national unity cannot thrive in an atmosphere where perceived political detentions remain unresolved.

Ohanaeze insisted that Tinubu must rise above inherited political grudges and champion a new path of dialogue and constitutional justice.

The group concluded by urging the president to take bold action in ending what it called a protracted legal injustice.

Kanu remains the face of the agitation for Biafra and his prolonged incarceration continues to fuel grievances across Igbo-speaking communities.

Observers believe his release could ease tensions, open new doors for dialogue, and de-escalate secessionist sentiments in the region.
