The Imo State government led by His Excellency, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, the Executive Governor of Imo State has provided details of accounts leading to the relocation of markets located within Owerri metropolis.
The fracas surrounding the event saw the untimely death of at least three persons at the hands of security personnels deployed by Governor Okorocha.

The crucial meeting was between Imo Service Chiefs represented by the Imo State Commissioner of Police, APC Party Leaders, Executives of all Imo Markets & Traders/ Artisans Union & also Imo Traders Union in the North & West lasted for 3hrs, 40 minutes.
Before taking final decision on free allocation of Shops for 3-6 months, His Excellency, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, OON, the Executive Governor of Imo State suggested that they should all move with him to all the markets built within the City of Owerri to take practical decision and show the World what he has done for Imolites in terms of MARKET Development.
PLEASE NOTE:
In 2014, His Excellency broke the News of Relocating Ekeukwu Market Owerri, Ama Hausa Owerri, New Market/ Spare Parts Market Owerri, Shopping Plaza, Naze Mechanic Village, Orji Mechanic Village.
In 2016 he held a meeting with the aforesaid members at IICC, Owerri, to inform the Market Unions and Artisans on the need to relocate the Markets and in attendance was over 5,000 traders.
His Excellency has equally held several meetings since 2016 till date with the Union Executives & members after which an ultimatum was given severally but was not adhered to.
The final meeting was held with the Executives on Thursday and Friday, 24th and 25th August, 2017, at the New Governor’s Lodge, Government House, Owerri at 2pm.
Over 5,000 traders & Artisans attended. At the meeting the Governor, again gave them another ultimatum to vacate the various places & relocate to where he has provided for all of them.

The Governor just concluded a tour with over 300 Executives of Market/Traders Union, Artisans & Hausa Community.
In his speech, he said: “I want to make Owerri Capital City to look like Dubai before I leave office as the Governor.”
He continued by saying that he will sanitize the Markets the way he has sanitized Imo Civil Service.

After relocation, market uniform which must be cooperate will be introduced to all traders & artisans in Imo, i.e. Blue shirt & black trousers/ skirts or something better – Rochas Okorocha
My Dream is to build a Market where breakfast will be served to Customers in the morning as they come to patronize you- Rochas Okorocha
I will establish a Commission that will see to the Empowerment of your Union members. Seminars, Symposiums, Loan & Grants will all be included, Owelle said.
I have no personal gains on all these Relocations other than to sanitize the State Capital to look cleaner, more Beautiful, flush out hoodlums, Gun runners & drug dealers, Rochas Okorocha emphasized.
No touting and no form of fees in any of these markets that I have shown you today, other than the ones you will pay after 3-6months depending on your compliance – Rochas Okorocha to Market/ Traders Unions
Its only in Imo that the Government has built Markets & beg her people to move in free for 6months & yet the newly built market were allowed to lie shallow & untenanted for about 2years- Rochas Okorocha

You see from January to December but I see from 1year to 50years & even up to 100 years ahead. Believe me, in the next 50-100 years, if Christ did not come, our Markets will also be moved from Naze/Nekede to far away from the Town, Owelle to Market & Traders Union.

OBSERVATION
It is highly regrettable to confirm that over 20 thousand shops in 8 -10 Locations has been built & completed by the Rochas Administration covering 100’s heaters of Land since his 1st tenure, until now, no own has occupied them.
Currently over 10 thousand shops are still under construction yet some critics are saying that the Government has not provide any Market for the traders before the ejection.
The relocation of these markets will in turn expand & extend Urbanization to those areas within the market sites like Nekede, Naze, Ihiagwa, Agbala, Avu, Egbeda, Aboha Ohie, Ugbomiri, Akwakuma and so on.
