Henry Amike, an Olympian has advocated for good synergy between education and sports to enable sportsmen and women to remain relevant after retirement.

Amike gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.

He urged institutions to give scholarships to deserving sportsmen and women who have shown great prospect.

He noted that by so doing, the athletes will be more productive.

“When athletes are relaxed, they bring out the best in themselves, the higher institution should give them scholarships.

“Psychologically, an athlete needs to be in a good place; sports people need support; they need to be able to blend education with sports,’’ Amike said.

He said that it was necessary for athletes to be prepared for life after sports.

According to him, the absence of education is what made athletes continue to struggle after their active service in sports.

“Look at the likes of Chioma Ajunwa, Mary Onyeali and many others; they will remain relevant as long as they live, because they are educated.

“After sports, they were able to forge ahead.

“It is important that upcoming athletes should understand this and get educated because relying on sports alone is dangerous.’’ (NAN)
