ASABA, NIGERIA — Former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has assured Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi of Delta State’s votes in the 2027 general election, citing what he described as the worsening living conditions in the state under the current administration.
Omo-Agege made the pledge on Thursday during a stakeholders’ meeting with NDC leaders and supporters in Asaba, where he formally declared his support for Obi’s presidential bid. He said the people of Delta State had suffered enough under the ruling All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party, and that they were ready for a change.
“I can assure you, Peter Obi, that Delta State will deliver for the NDC in 2027. Our people are tired of the suffering, the poverty, and the neglect. They are ready for a new direction, and the NDC is that new direction,” Omo-Agege stated.
The former Deputy Senate President, who recently defected from the APC to the NDC, said his decision to support Obi was based on the candidate’s track record of prudent leadership, economic competence, and commitment to the welfare of ordinary Nigerians. He said Obi had demonstrated, during his tenure as governor of Anambra State, that he could deliver good governance and improve the lives of the people.
“Peter Obi is the only candidate in this race who understands the challenges facing our people. He has the experience, the competence, and the integrity to lead Nigeria out of its current economic and security crises. I am proud to support him,” Omo-Agege said.
He said the NDC would build a strong grassroots structure in Delta State to mobilise voters and to ensure that the party’s message reaches every ward and polling unit. He also urged party members to remain united and focused on the task ahead.
“We are going to work hard. We are going to build a structure that will deliver victory for the NDC in 2027. We will not be distracted by the propaganda of the ruling party. Our focus is on winning the election and giving Nigerians the leadership they deserve,” he said.
Obi, who attended the meeting, thanked Omo-Agege and the people of Delta State for their support. He reiterated his commitment to transforming Nigeria’s economy, tackling insecurity, and creating opportunities for young people.
“I am humbled by the support I have received from the people of Delta State. I promise that I will not let you down. My administration will prioritise the welfare of our people, invest in education and healthcare, and create an economy that works for everyone,” Obi stated.
The NDC presidential candidate also called on Nigerians to register and collect their Permanent Voter Cards, stressing that the 2027 election was an opportunity to change the course of the country’s history.
“Your vote is your power. Do not sell it. Do not allow anyone to intimidate you. Come out and vote for the NDC, and together, we will build a new Nigeria,” he said.
The meeting was attended by NDC leaders and stakeholders from across Delta State, including the party’s governorship candidate in the state, Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs. The party said the defection of Omo-Agege to the NDC was a significant boost to its chances in the South-South region.
Political analysts say Omo-Agege’s support for Obi could strengthen the NDC’s position in Delta State and the broader South-South region, where the party is seeking to make inroads ahead of the 2027 elections. They, however, caution that the NDC will need to build on the momentum and translate the support into votes on election day.
For now, the NDC is celebrating a major political endorsement, and Obi’s supporters are hopeful that Delta State will be one of the states the party wins in 2027. As the elections approach, the focus will shift to how effectively the NDC can mobilise its support base and convert endorsements into electoral success.
