Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of injustice ahead of the governorship election on Saturday.
Mimiko made the accusation while addressing a press conference at the Dome in Akure on Friday.
He insisted that the electoral body should have postponed the election following the court cases that followed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’ s primary.
Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja had declared Jimoh Ibrahim the genuine candidate of the party in October.
However, the Appeal Court upturned the judgement and held that Eyitayo Jegede was the recognized candidate of the party in a judgement on Wednesday.
Mimiko was furious that INEC ignored all the pleas from stakeholders urging it to postpone the election.
This was to allow the PDP’s candidate carry out a proper campaign programme like others and also mobilise funds for the polls.
He said such an action was a clear demonstration of injustice.
“How do you expect a candidate to mobilise funds within 24 hours for an election?
How do you expect a candidate to do campaign within 24 hours?
“This is unfair and that is why I have been going to Abuja to appeal to the President to instruct INEC to do the right thing,” he lamented.
While responding to questions from journalists, the governor said he wouldn’t instruct the people of the state to boycott the election despite the injustice being meted out on the party by powers that be.
He charged the electorates to fight the injustice being perpetuated by INEC by not only coming out to vote en masse but by also protecting their votes.
