(DDM) – Veteran Nollywood actress Jaiye Kuti has praised Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala for her extraordinary impact on women’s football in Nigeria and Africa, describing her as one of the continent’s greatest players.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Kuti, speaking in an interview with The Punch, also reflected on her childhood love for sports, her support for Nigerian teams, and her vision for greater recognition of female athletes.
She recalled actively participating in high jump and track events during her school days.
Kuti said the camaraderie and thrill of competition during those years left lasting memories.
Although she had a strong interest in athletics, she revealed that the arts eventually won her heart, offering fulfilment in a different form.
The actress, known for her deep cultural portrayals, supports Nigeria’s Super Eagles and English club Chelsea, largely because of the teams’ style and energy.
Kuti noted that live football matches hold a special kind of excitement, citing a Lagos local league game as one of her most memorable experiences.
Among her favourite Nigerian sports icons, she listed late striker Rashidi Yekini, Nwankwo Kanu, Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha, and Oshoala.
She described Oshoala as a trailblazer whose achievements have put Nigeria on the global sporting map.
Kuti commended both the Super Falcons and D’Tigress for their recent continental triumphs.
The Super Falcons secured their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title, while D’Tigress clinched a fifth consecutive AfroBasket championship.
She stressed that these victories highlight the dedication and prowess of Nigeria’s female athletes, noting they have achieved more continental success than their male counterparts.
On the recent $100,000 presidential reward to the athletes, Kuti said that while opinions differ on whether the amount is adequate, the gesture shows the nation’s appreciation.
She urged stakeholders to further invest in women’s sports by improving facilities, increasing funding, and enhancing grassroots development programmes.
Kuti highlighted the importance of visibility and representation in inspiring younger generations, citing her own daughter’s active participation in football and basketball.
The actress also discussed the connection between sports and entertainment in Nigeria.
She believes both sectors evoke emotions, foster unity, and create stories that transcend cultural divides.
According to her, sports-themed Nollywood productions could inspire audiences by showcasing themes of teamwork, perseverance, and triumph.
On her personal fitness routine, Kuti said she enjoys walking, swimming, and cardio workouts to maintain her health and energy for acting.
Her comments have sparked fresh conversation on the role of star athletes like Oshoala in inspiring a new era for women’s sports in Nigeria.
