The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has announced the election of Afam Osigwe, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), as its new president.

Osigwe secured a landslide victory in the 2024 NBA election, held online from Saturday to Sunday, garnering 20,395 votes to defeat his closest rivals, Tobenna Erojikwe and Chukwuka Ikwuazom (SAN), who scored 10,970 and 9,007 votes, respectively.

The election, which saw the participation of lawyers from across the country, was held online, with real-time results displayed on the NBA website.

Osigwe’s victory marks a significant milestone in the history of the NBA, as he becomes the first person to hold the position of president from the eastern region of the country.

Osigwe, a former Secretary-General of the NBA, is a renowned legal practitioner with extensive experience in dispute resolution, arbitration, and mediation.

His campaign focused on promoting the welfare of lawyers, improving the justice system, and enhancing the NBA’s role in promoting the rule of law in Nigeria.

In his acceptance speech, Osigwe thanked the NBA members for their support and promised to work tirelessly to address the challenges facing the legal profession in Nigeria. He also pledged to build on the achievements of his predecessors and take the NBA to greater heights.

The new NBA president will officially take over the leadership baton from the outgoing president, Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), and is expected to lead the association for the next two years.

In a related development, Mrs. Bridget Edokwe was elected as the association’s spokesperson, while other national officers were also elected to various positions.
