OSOGBO, Nigeria — The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Accord Party have traded words over remarks made by Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke concerning recent political killings and alleged threats ahead of the state’s governorship election, further intensifying the political atmosphere as preparations for the poll continue.
The disagreement followed comments attributed to Governor Adeleke in which he expressed concern over reported incidents of political violence and called on security agencies to take proactive measures to safeguard lives and maintain peace before, during and after the election. The governor also appealed to political actors to avoid inflammatory statements and actions capable of undermining public confidence in the electoral process.
Responding to the governor’s remarks, the Osun State chapter of the APC accused Adeleke of attempting to politicise security issues for political advantage. The party argued that allegations relating to political violence should not be used to create fear among residents or to influence public opinion ahead of the election.
The APC maintained that all political parties have a responsibility to promote peace and conduct issue-based campaigns rather than making statements capable of heightening tension. It also urged security agencies to remain neutral and ensure equal protection for all political parties, candidates and supporters throughout the election period.
On its part, the Accord Party defended Governor Adeleke’s position, insisting that concerns about political violence should not be ignored or dismissed. The party argued that raising alarm over security challenges is necessary to prevent further incidents and encourage timely intervention by law enforcement agencies.
According to the Accord Party, every report of political violence deserves thorough investigation, irrespective of the political affiliation of those involved. The party stressed that ensuring the safety of citizens remains the primary responsibility of government and security agencies, particularly during election periods when political activities often increase.
The party further urged security agencies to investigate all allegations of threats and violence objectively and ensure that individuals found responsible for criminal acts are arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. It maintained that justice and accountability are essential to preserving public confidence in the democratic process.
The exchange comes as political campaigns gather momentum ahead of the Osun governorship election, with parties intensifying efforts to mobilise support across the state. Political observers have noted that security has emerged as one of the dominant issues shaping public discussions as the election approaches.
Security agencies have repeatedly assured residents of their readiness to maintain law and order throughout the electoral process. They have warned politicians, supporters and other stakeholders against violence, intimidation, hate speech and any actions capable of disrupting public peace, promising to enforce the law without bias.
Civil society organisations have also called on political leaders to exercise restraint and focus their campaigns on policies, governance and development issues rather than inflammatory rhetoric. They emphasised that peaceful elections are vital to strengthening democracy and protecting the rights of voters.
Analysts believe sustained collaboration among political parties, security agencies, the Independent National Electoral Commission and community leaders will be essential to ensuring a peaceful governorship election in Osun State. They argue that early intervention, effective security planning and responsible political conduct will help minimise tensions and prevent election-related violence.
As political activities continue ahead of the poll, the APC and the Accord Party remain divided over Governor Adeleke’s remarks. While the APC insists the comments unnecessarily politicise security concerns, the Accord Party maintains that highlighting potential threats is necessary to safeguard lives and ensure a peaceful, credible and transparent electoral process.
