Authorities in Oyo State have intensified efforts to sanitize veterinary operations, sealing no fewer than 15 unauthorized outlets across Ibadan.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the enforcement action was carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development during a recent inspection sweep.

The sealed premises were reportedly operating in violation of the Oyo State Private Veterinary Premises and Veterinary Establishment (Regulation) Law, 2017.

Goods and veterinary items worth millions of naira were seized during the enforcement exercise, according to government officials.

State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Olasunkanmi Olaleye, made the disclosure in Ibadan on Tuesday via an official statement.

Speaking through the Deputy Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Olaoye Olakunle, the commissioner stated that the move was part of the government’s commitment to public and animal health.

He stressed that all veterinary premises in the state are required by law to undergo annual registration and verification with the ministry.

Olaleye noted that non-compliance undermines efforts to monitor animal treatment, prevent zoonotic disease outbreaks, and eliminate quack practices.

“This action is not punitive but preventive,” he said.

“We are committed to safeguarding public health, ensuring food safety, and protecting animal life.”

He added that the government would continue to enforce the law until full compliance is achieved across the state.

Practitioners operating without proper registration would face legal consequences as prescribed under the 2017 law, he warned.

The enforcement team was accompanied by key stakeholders in the sector, including the Chairman of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, John Famoyin.

Also present were the President of the Association of Private Veterinary Medical Practitioners, Awoyele Adebayo, and other sector leaders.

They described the government’s efforts as timely and crucial to ending malpractice in veterinary services across the state.

Olaleye urged all practitioners to regularize their operations and avoid disruption of business by complying with legal requirements.

The crackdown signals the beginning of a broader statewide campaign aimed at sanitizing the veterinary landscape in Oyo.

Further inspections are expected in the coming weeks as the ministry pushes for total compliance.
