The Oyo State Police Command has issued a statement following the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy by one of its officers.
The victim, Kehinde Alade, was reportedly hit by a stray bullet during a traffic enforcement operation in Ibadan.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the incident occurred on the morning of May 20, near Airport Roundabout, Egbeda Local Government Area.
According to police spokesperson Osifeso Adewale, the operation was conducted jointly with the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA).
Adewale explained that the boy’s father, Odunayo Alade, was stopped for allegedly driving against traffic.
Instead of complying, the father reportedly sped off, colliding with two OYTMA vehicles and a police patrol truck.
Police officers, suspecting a possible abduction or criminal attempt, began a pursuit to halt the fleeing vehicle.
A corporal reportedly fired at the car’s tyres in an effort to immobilize it.
Tragically, the bullet struck the teenager who was seated behind the driver.
Kehinde Alade was immediately rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan.
He was pronounced dead on arrival, and his body was moved to Adeoyo State Hospital for autopsy.
The incident has sparked outrage, with many questioning the use of firearms in densely populated areas.
In response, Oyo State Police Commissioner Johnson Adenola deployed tactical and intelligence units to maintain order.
He also ordered a full investigation into the events that led to the teenager’s death.
The officer who fired the fatal shot, along with others on the team, has been taken into custody.
The Deputy Commissioner in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department will lead the probe.
The police assured the public of a thorough and transparent investigation.
They also extended condolences to the bereaved family and promised to make their findings public.
This incident has once again raised concerns over the conduct and training of enforcement officers in Nigeria.
Human rights groups are demanding justice and a review of police engagement protocols.
Many Nigerians on social media have condemned the act, calling it another avoidable tragedy.
The tragic death of Kehinde Alade is now fueling fresh calls for police reform and accountability.
More updates are expected as investigations proceed.
