Palliative stampede: Hunger has turned Nigeria to Somalia — Akeredolu’s widow

Dr. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, former First Lady of Ondo State, has expressed deep worries over the worsening economic conditions in Nigeria, comparing the country’s current situation to the war-torn state of Somalia due to widespread hunger and poverty.

Mrs Betty’s remark is coming after a tragic stampedes at palliatives sharing events in Oyo, Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory.

This medium reported that a stampede at a children’s funfair event on December 18, 2024, resulted in the death of at least 35 children with many others seriously injured in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

Also on Saturday, December 21, 2024, another stampede occurred at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, Abuja, during the distribution of food items to the vulnerable and elderly people.

The incident led to the death of 10 individuals, leaving many others injured.

A similar incident was also recorded in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area, Anambra State on Saturday, at a palliative distribution organized by a philanthropist identified as Obi Jackson, which led to the death of 22 people.

However, Betty in a post on her official X handle, lamented the dire circumstances faced by Nigerians.

While reacting to the unfortunate incident, Anyanwu-Akeredolu said, “Hunger has turned Nigeria into Somalia. This is Ikegwuru (tiring) Situation!”.

Meanwhile, her post underscores the severe hardships Nigerians are currently enduring under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
