ABUJA, Nigeria — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for an investigation into remarks attributed to Senator Francis Fadahunsi in a viral video, expressing concern that the comments could heighten political tension and encourage violence ahead of future elections.
The party said the reported remarks were disturbing and should be examined by relevant security and law-enforcement authorities. It urged the authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the statement and determine whether the senator committed any offence.
The PDP warned that political disagreements must not be allowed to degenerate into threats against individuals, political opponents or their supporters. It stressed that political leaders and public officials have a responsibility to promote peace, tolerance and restraint, particularly during periods of heightened electoral tension.
The party’s demand comes amid growing concerns over inflammatory political rhetoric and election-related violence in Nigeria. It called on security agencies to closely monitor statements capable of provoking violence or creating fear among voters and political supporters.
The PDP maintained that anyone found to have made threats or encouraged violence should be held accountable under the law, regardless of political affiliation or status. It also urged security authorities to handle any investigation impartially and transparently.
The controversy surrounding the viral video has attracted attention within political circles, with concerns that inflammatory comments could worsen tensions ahead of elections and undermine confidence in the democratic process.
The party further appealed to political actors across the country to avoid provocative statements and concentrate on issues that would strengthen democratic participation. It said elections should be won through peaceful campaigns, persuasion and the ballot box rather than intimidation, threats or violence.
The PDP also urged authorities to make the outcome of any investigation public, arguing that transparency would reassure Nigerians that political incitement and election-related violence would not be tolerated.
The development comes against the backdrop of wider concerns over political violence in parts of Nigeria, with political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders repeatedly calling for stronger measures to protect voters, candidates and election officials.
The PDP said peaceful elections remain essential to Nigeria’s democratic stability and urged all political actors to respect the rule of law while pursuing their political interests.
