(DDM) – A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party has disclosed that about 2,500 delegates are expected to attend its scheduled national convention on Sunday.
The development was confirmed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who expressed confidence in the turnout despite ongoing internal disagreements within the party.
Wike stated that preparations for the convention are in advanced stages, with logistics being finalised to ensure a smooth and successful event.
He noted that the anticipated number of delegates reflects strong participation from party members across various states.
The announcement comes amid persistent efforts by party leaders to reconcile differences among competing factions.
The PDP has been grappling with internal divisions over leadership structure and strategic direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Political observers say the convention is expected to play a crucial role in determining the party’s future leadership and unity.
The faction aligned with Wike insists that proceeding with the convention is necessary to maintain momentum and organisational stability.
However, opposing blocs within the party have raised concerns about the process, calling for broader consultations before major decisions are taken.
These disagreements have heightened tensions within the PDP, raising fears of further fragmentation.
Despite the divisions, Wike maintained that the party remains committed to resolving its internal issues through dialogue and engagement.
He emphasised the importance of unity in strengthening the party’s position as a major opposition force in Nigeria.
Analysts note that the success of the convention will depend largely on the level of participation and acceptance by all factions.
They warn that unresolved disputes could undermine the legitimacy of decisions taken at the gathering.
The PDP has historically relied on its national conventions to elect leaders, set policy directions, and consolidate party structures.
Delegates expected at the event will represent different states, interest groups, and party organs.
The outcome of the convention could influence the party’s strategy and alignment ahead of future elections.
Stakeholders continue to call for compromise and inclusiveness to avoid deepening the crisis.
Observers say the coming days will be critical in determining whether the party can achieve a unified front.
Attention remains focused on the convention as a key test of the PDP’s internal cohesion and political strength.
