PDP Leadership Crisis Deepens Ahead Of National Convention

Share this:

(DDM) – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is embroiled in a deepening leadership crisis as internal divisions widen over the Akwa Ibom State chapter.

DDM gathered that tensions escalated after acting national chairman Umar Damagum approved the dissolution of the Akwa Ibom State executive.

Damagum cited alleged connections between the state chapter and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as justification for the action.

However, National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu immediately rejected the dissolution, labeling it illegal.

Anyanwu insisted that only the National Executive Committee (NEC) possesses the authority to dissolve state chapters.

Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba weighed in, claiming that 16 of 19 National Working Committee members supported the establishment of a caretaker committee in Akwa Ibom.

Ologunagba accused Anyanwu of prioritizing personal interests over the party’s cohesion and institutional rules.

The conflict has sparked intense debate within the PDP, exposing fault lines among top officials.

Party sources indicate that the disagreement has already caused disruption in state-level party activities.

Political analysts warn that the crisis could undermine preparations for the PDP’s national convention.

The convention is scheduled to hold on November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Observers note that unresolved disputes could weaken the party’s organizational structure ahead of critical elections.

PDP members in Akwa Ibom are reportedly divided, with some supporting Damagum’s move and others backing Anyanwu’s position.

Local party leaders fear that continued infighting could erode public confidence in the PDP.

Sources say the National Working Committee is expected to meet again to attempt reconciliation between the conflicting factions.

Analysts argue that the Akwa Ibom crisis reflects broader challenges in managing internal democracy within Nigeria’s major political parties.

The disagreement has already dominated political conversations among PDP stakeholders nationwide.

Party elders are being called upon to intervene and restore unity before the convention.

Observers stress that swift resolution is crucial to prevent long-term damage to the party’s electoral prospects.

Meanwhile, social media platforms have become a battleground, with members expressing divergent views on the legality and implications of the dissolution.

Political commentators note that the unfolding crisis could set precedents for how internal disputes are handled in other state chapters.
