Peace or perish: Pope Leo issues doomsday warning to Iran, Israel

Pope Leo XIV has made a heartfelt appeal to the governments of Iran and Israel, urging them to abandon vengeance and choose dialogue and diplomacy in the aftermath of their 12-day war.

Speaking from St. Peter’s Square during his weekly audience on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, the pope addressed thousands of worshippers and global viewers, emphasizing the need for peaceful resolution over retaliation.

“May all logic of oppression and revenge be rejected,” he said. “May the path of dialogue, diplomacy, and peace be chosen with determination.”

The pope’s comments come just days after the United States joined the conflict, launching airstrikes in support of Israel.

The strikes specifically targeted Iran’s uranium-enrichment sites, sparking fears of further escalation across the Middle East.

The conflict between Iran and Israel, which erupted earlier this month, has left hundreds dead and raised global concerns about the potential for a broader regional war.

Both countries have exchanged multiple rounds of air and missile strikes, severely damaging infrastructure and straining diplomatic relations.

Pope Leo’s appeal is the first major Vatican intervention since the outbreak of hostilities.

Diaspora Digital Media reported that the Holy See has historically called for restraint, de-escalation, and multilateral dialogue in conflict zones, especially when religious and civilian lives are at risk.

His statement echoed similar calls from the United Nations and European Union, both of which have urged all parties to avoid actions that could spiral into a full-scale regional war.

As global leaders scramble for a ceasefire agreement, the pope’s moral leadership adds significant pressure on both sides to reconsider their next steps.

Observers say the Vatican’s appeal could influence negotiations, especially among European mediators.

With tensions still high, the international community will be watching closely to see whether Iran and Israel respond to the pope’s message of peace or continue on a path of confrontation.
