Popular TikTok content creator Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, widely known as Peller, has reacted to the backlash surrounding his recent visit to the palace of the Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin.

The controversy began after Peller’s appearance at the palace on March 6 drew criticism from the Benin Traditional Council, which described the visit as a violation of established palace protocols. The council emphasized that access to the palace is highly regulated and requires proper authorization in line with long-standing traditions.

Following the incident, internal disciplinary actions were reportedly taken within the palace. These included the suspension of a chief and legal action against a palace staff member allegedly involved in facilitating the visit.

Addressing the issue during a live broadcast, Peller denied personal responsibility for the situation. He explained that his presence at the palace was arranged by his management team and that he followed their direction without full knowledge of the cultural and procedural requirements.

According to him, he believed the visit had been properly organized and did not intentionally disregard any rules. He also stated that his behavior during the visit remained respectful at all times, adding that he did not act in a way that would deliberately offend the palace or its traditions.

Peller further suggested that the level of backlash may have been amplified, hinting that reactions to the incident appeared coordinated beyond the initial concerns raised.

The situation has sparked wider conversations online about respect for traditional institutions, particularly when public figures and influencers engage with culturally significant spaces. Many observers have stressed the importance of understanding and adhering to local customs, especially in historically revered institutions like the Benin Palace.

The Benin Kingdom, led by the Oba, holds deep cultural and historical significance in Nigeria, with strict protocols guiding interactions within the palace. Violations of these traditions are often taken seriously, reflecting the importance of preserving heritage and authority.
