Labour Party leader and former presidential candidate Peter Obi extended warm birthday wishes to former President Muhammadu Buhari on his 82nd birthday.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the gesture shared on Obi’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, has sparked widespread reactions and reignited discussions about Buhari’s mixed record as Nigeria’s leader.

In his post, Obi wrote, “Your Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, as you mark your 82nd birthday anniversary today, on behalf of my family, I sincerely congratulate you.

May God Almighty grant you many more healthy and happy years ahead. -PO.”

This message of goodwill, though brief, has been interpreted as a demonstration of Obi’s dedication to fostering unity and respect in Nigeria’s often fractious political environment.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2023, handed over power to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in May 2023.

He is celebrating his birthday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, where he hosted political associates, including former Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.

Obi’s congratulatory message, while praised by many as an act of statesmanship, also brings renewed attention to Buhari’s controversial tenure.

Buhari’s administration, widely regarded as a pivotal chapter in Nigeria’s history, was characterized by unfulfilled promises, economic turbulence, and rising insecurity.

His presidency began with a groundswell of optimism, driven by pledges to tackle corruption, improve security, and revive the economy.

However, these promises often fell short, leaving Nigerians divided in their assessment of his leadership.

Economically, Buhari’s government struggled to navigate a challenging global environment, with the country facing inflation, unemployment, and economic stagnation.

Critics argue that his administration’s policies, including forex restrictions and a reliance on oil revenue, stifled innovation and economic growth.

The security situation also worsened during his tenure, with persistent insurgencies by Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), alongside rising cases of banditry, kidnappings, and communal violence.

While Buhari’s anti-corruption stance earned him praise early in his presidency, allegations of selective prosecutions and political bias in corruption cases tarnished his reputation.

His handling of governance and reform efforts in key sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure also drew significant criticism.

Despite these challenges, Buhari retained a loyal base of supporters who admired his personal discipline and perceived integrity.

Many saw him as a leader who, despite setbacks, remained committed to the welfare of the nation.

His military background and tenure as a military Head of State (1983–1985) further contributed to his image as a no-nonsense leader.

Obi’s congratulatory note has sparked conversations about the importance of statesmanship, especially in the context of Nigeria’s deeply polarized politics.

While Buhari’s legacy remains a subject of debate, Obi’s gesture emphasizes the need for civility and mutual respect among leaders, regardless of political affiliations.

As Buhari celebrates another year, Nigerians continue to reflect on his presidency’s achievements and shortcomings.

Obi’s message serves as a reminder that leadership is not only about policies and performance but also about fostering unity and setting an example of decorum and respect in a diverse nation.
