Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi (left); Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara; Chief Zikky Azigy, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, Prestige Ossy, Onyechi Ikpeazu and Chuchu Onyema during the presentation of Nwabueze’s book, Save Our Constitutional Democracy From Emasculation in Abuja on Monday.

The former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi has commended Prof. Ben Nwabueze for his contributions to the institutionalisation and growth of democracy in Nigeria.

Mr. Obi hailed Nwabueze as a member of many constitution drafting committees, a former Minister of Education and a university teacher.

He also recounted his membership of many respected social cultural groups, and, most importantly, his contributions towards the demolition of the empire of ignorance through books that are intellectually stimulating.

He made the observations during the public presentation of a book titled “Save our Constitutional Democracy from Emasculation”, written by Prof. Nwabueze, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Conference Centre, Abuja yesterday.

Speaking further, he described the Nigerian Judiciary as being among the best in the world.

The former governor recalled three incidents that brought him face to face with the judiciary and how he came out in flying colours:

i. how he secured his governorship seat through the courts,

ii. how he came back from impeachment through the courts,

iii. as well as how he secured the tenure interpretation that led to the staggering of elections in the country.

He said that those interventions renewed his faith in the judiciary, especially when, between him and his God, he knew he did not know the judges.

“Indeed”, he stressed,” the judiciary remains the last hope for the common man.”

The author, Prof. Nwabueze thanked all those that graced the occasion and urged Nigerians to always have the country’s progress and development at heart.

He thanked Nigerians for their love and concern for him, especially Mr Obi for visiting him now and then in his house.

One of the many dignitaries that graced the occasion was the speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara who was the chairman of the event.

In his speech, Hon. Dogara said that there were many things about Nwabueze that were worthy of emulation.

He noted that despite advancing age, he was still consumed by what was good for Nigeria as shown by his most recent book.

Other dignitaries at the event were the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Deputy Senate President, Rt. Hon. Ike Ekweremadu, represented by Sen. Obi, Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu, among others.
