Peter Obi threatens legal action against activist over defamation claims

(DDM) – Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has commenced legal proceedings against political activist Deji Adeyanju, alleging a sustained campaign of defamation across social media platforms.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the move follows several online publications in which Adeyanju reportedly made damaging claims about Obi’s integrity and political conduct.

In a formal letter of demand, issued by Obi’s legal counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Alex Ejesieme, Adeyanju was accused of publishing false, malicious, and injurious statements intended to tarnish Obi’s public image.

The letter alleged that Adeyanju, via X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and other outlets, portrayed the former Anambra State governor as corrupt, fraudulent, and divisive.

Obi’s legal team claimed that some of the controversial posts dated back to 2022, yet continued to circulate widely during and after the 2023 general elections.

Among the damaging claims cited were allegations that Obi misappropriated Anambra State funds for family businesses, offered Adeyanju a bribe after a private meeting, and exploited religion to manipulate voters during the presidential campaign.

The letter dismissed the allegations as “false, malicious, and contrived,” asserting that none of the accusations had any factual basis.

It also accused Adeyanju of calling Obi “the leader of a mob” and “a scum,” descriptions the legal team said were deliberately crafted to depict him as a dangerous and anarchic figure.

Obi’s lawyers have demanded that Adeyanju delete all defamatory publications, issue a public apology across his social media platforms, and publish retractions in at least three national newspapers.

Failure to comply within seven days, the letter warned, would result in a lawsuit seeking aggravated damages, legal cost recovery, and an injunction restraining Adeyanju from making further defamatory remarks.

“The statements have been widely disseminated, causing untold damage to our client’s reputation and integrity,” the legal notice stated.

Observers say the development marks one of Obi’s most direct confrontations with political critics since the conclusion of the 2023 elections.
