Peter Obi’s ADC loyalty rules out possible PDP defection

(DDM) – A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Sani, has stated that Peter Obi is unlikely to return to the party.

Sani described Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, as being “married” to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He made the remarks during an interview on ARISE Television’s The Morning Show on Friday.

Sani, who served as Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to former Vice President Namadi Sambo, referenced Obi’s recent political directives.

According to him, Obi had instructed his supporters to vote for an ADC candidate during a by-election, despite still being a Labour Party member.

The Labour Party leadership, Sani said, had urged its members to disregard Obi’s directive.

“This has shown that Peter Obi is married to the ADC and is most unlikely to defect to the PDP,” Sani asserted.

He added that while Obi has acknowledged approaches from the PDP, a defection remains improbable.

Sani also addressed speculation about former President Goodluck Jonathan and Peter Obi returning to the PDP.

He dismissed such claims as mere political conjecture.

The PDP, Sani explained, is actively seeking more capable leaders to revive the party’s operations.

He noted that the party has lost two governors to the ruling APC, with Rivers State at risk of following.

“The Wike factor is also still very much alive,” Sani observed.

He stressed that no political party can survive without high-profile personalities to attract voters and maintain relevance.

DDM notes that Obi’s political movements and alliances continue to spark debates within Nigeria’s political space.

Analysts say his decision to align with ADC candidates, even temporarily, could reshape opposition dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections.

For the PDP, internal instability and the loss of key figures remain significant challenges in regaining political dominance.

Sani’s remarks underscore growing tensions between opposition parties as they position for the next general election.
