A former presidential aide and controversial commentator, Reno Omokri, has stirred another political storm, claiming that the UK business owned by Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, failed woefully and was struck off by British authorities.

In a statement  issued via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, June 5, 2025, challenging Obi’s supporters to independently verify the claim. He wrote:

“Please fact-check me: Peter Obi’s business failed woefully in the UK and had to be struck off the books and dissolved by the British Government.”

Omokri, a staunch supporter of the current All Progressives Congress (APC) government, asserted that while Obi’s foreign business flopped, his investments in Nigeria are prospering under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“But under Tinubu, both the bank where he has about 10% shares and his Next Supermarket are thriving,” Omokri noted.

He further alleged that the bank in which Peter Obi holds equity posted record-breaking profits during Tinubu’s first year in office.

“His bank increased its profitability under Tinubu to ₦385.2 billion in the year ending December 2024, compared with ₦124.3 billion in the year ending December 2023,” Omokri claimed.

The former aide questioned Obi’s repeated criticism of the Tinubu administration, suggesting hypocrisy in his refusal to revive his UK ventures while continuing to operate and profit within Nigeria.

“If Tinubu has ruined our economy, as Peter Obi says, why has he not relocated to England to revive his dead business there?” he asked rhetorically.

Omokri didn’t stop at the business angle. In a veiled mockery of a past incident, he recalled Obi’s reported detention in the United Kingdom.

“Obi should not worry. He will not be detained at London Heathrow Airport, like the last time!” Omokri quipped, referencing unverified reports of Obi’s brief stop by UK immigration in 2023.

The remarks have reignited tensions between Obi’s supporters — known as “Obidients” — and Tinubu loyalists, as accusations and counter-claims flood social media.

While critics have accused Omokri of acting as a political hitman for the ruling APC, his defenders argue he’s exposing what they describe as Obi’s double standards.

No official statement has been issued by Peter Obi or his media team in response to the allegations as of the time of this report.

Records from the UK’s Companies House could confirm whether any business associated with Obi was formally struck off or dissolved.

However, such public data had not yet been cited by Omokri or independent verifiers.

Political analysts suggest the renewed attacks are part of early maneuvering ahead of the 2027 general election, where Obi is widely expected to mount another presidential challenge.

Obi, who governed Anambra State from 2006 to 2014, has often prided himself on financial prudence and economic insight.

His growing popularity among youths and urban voters remains a significant concern for the ruling establishment.

Omokri’s latest claims may deepen the existing political divide, but they also spotlight the intense scrutiny faced by high-profile opposition figures in Nigeria’s volatile political landscape.
