Details have emerged that the man President Bola Tinubu introduced as his classmate at Chicago University during public event on Monday, was an alleged arms dealer arrested in DRC in 2021.

The introduction happened at the launch of the Renewed Hope Agriculture Mechanisation Programme, which saw the unveiling of 2,000 tractors and 9,000 specialised farming tools.

During the event, Tinubu pointed out the man, simply identified as Mr. Alex, saying: “Alex was my very good neighbour and classmate in Chicago. We never imagined I’d become Nigeria’s President and he, a successful businessman from Belarus. Our university should be proud of what we’re doing here today.”

Alex stood up in acknowledgment as Tinubu spoke.

Diaspora Digital Media reported that the president’s academic history, particularly his association with CSU, has been a subject of intense public scrutiny and political debate since the 2023 general elections.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu is currently facing scrutiny after social media users uncovered that the man he introduced as his former classmate at Chicago State University has a controversial past—including an alleged arrest for arms dealing in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in 2021.

Additionally, records suggest the individual was only 13 years old in the year Tinubu claimed to have graduated (1979), raising further questions about the authenticity of the President’s academic claims.

The revelation has sparked renewed debate over Tinubu’s academic history, which has been a subject of controversy in the past.
