PHOTOS: Amaechi, Buhari’s Trusted Ally, Storms Daura in Traditional Attire

Former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi arrived in Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Dressed in full traditional attire, Amaechi made a symbolic appearance ahead of Buhari’s state burial.
Amaechi, a long-time ally of Buhari, served in his cabinet throughout the two-term administration from 2015 to 2023.
His visit came just hours before Buhari’s remains were expected to land at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina.
Security was tightened around Buhari’s private residence in Daura. Several dignitaries, political allies, and family members had already begun arriving for the funeral.
Amaechi’s appearance stood out. He wore the ceremonial dress of a northern chief fitting for his title, Dan Amanar Daura (Trusted Son of Daura).
The Emir of Daura, His Royal Highness Umar Farouk Umar, had conferred the title on Amaechi in 2022.
That chieftaincy title reflected Buhari’s deep trust in him.
At the time, many speculated that Buhari preferred Amaechi as his potential successor. While that didn’t happen, their political bond remained unshaken.
Tuesday’s funeral preparations have drawn prominent figures from across Nigeria and beyond. Among them was the Prime Minister of Niger Republic and his delegation, who also arrived earlier in Katsina to pay their respects.
Amaechi’s presence in Daura further highlights the depth of his relationship with the late President.
The two men worked closely during the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), particularly in Buhari’s successful 2015 presidential bid.
In 2022, during a visit to Daura, the Emir hailed Amaechi’s loyalty, describing him as “a man of honour and commitment.” That moment was seen by many as Buhari’s subtle endorsement during the pre-2023 political power tussle.
As Buhari’s burial proceeded in line with Islamic rites, national focus shifted to Daura not just for grief, but also for reflection on his legacy.
Amaechi stood among those closest to the former leader, marking the end of an era.
