PHOTOS: Peter Obi Donates ₦15M to Boost Nursing Education in Edo

Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023 election, Peter Obi, has donated ₦15 million to the Philomena College of Nursing Sciences in Benin City, Edo State, to support the institution’s mission of training dedicated nurses and improving Nigeria’s healthcare delivery.

Obi made the donation during a visit to the college on Monday, July 7, 2025, where he emphasized the urgent need for leaders to prioritize investments in healthcare, education, and poverty alleviation.

He described the donation not as charity, but as a deliberate investment in building a better and healthier future for Nigeria.

“I came here because I believe strongly that our development as a country depends on how we invest in people,” Obi told the college management and students.

“This ₦15 million contribution is my way of supporting the ongoing work of this institution.

We must prioritize healthcare, education, and lifting our people out of poverty. That’s how we build a new Nigeria.”

Obi has previously supported the college and other educational institutions across the country.

He noted that a healthy and educated population forms the foundation of every progressive society and reiterated his long-standing commitment to these sectors.

“This college plays a critical role in strengthening our healthcare system by training the next generation of nurses,” Obi added. “I thank the management, staff, and students for their dedication.

A new Nigeria will only emerge when we start investing in our people, especially through health and education.”

The former Anambra State governor has become known for his consistent support of schools and hospitals.

Just last week, he donated ₦10 million to Ukwulu Science College in Anambra in recognition of their outstanding performance at the UK-Nigeria Debate Championship.

During the visit to Philomena College, Obi toured ongoing construction projects and spoke with staff and nursing students.

He urged them to remain committed to their training, assuring them that their efforts would play a crucial role in transforming the country’s healthcare system.

“This is not politics; this is development,” he said. “We cannot wait for government alone. Every one of us must contribute to the future we want to see.”
