(DDM) – Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State have officially rejected any speculated move by Governor Caleb Mutfwang to join the party.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the development comes amid widespread rumours that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governor may defect, following similar moves by Governors Peter Mbah of Enugu and Douye Diri of Bayelsa.
Despite speculation, Governor Mutfwang has consistently dismissed reports of defection, affirming his commitment to remain in the PDP until the next general election.
The APC held a stakeholders’ meeting at Crest Hotel, Jos, on Friday, attended by top party leaders, including National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, former Governor Senator Simon Bako Lalong, former Deputy Speaker Idris Wase, and former Governor Joshua Dariye.
During the meeting, the APC resolved unanimously through a voice vote that Governor Mutfwang would not be accepted into the party.
Barrister Festus Fuanter moved the motion, stating the party would focus on winning the 2027 elections independently, without reliance on defectors.
“We don’t want anybody coming to our party. You do your thing, and we’ll do ours,” Fuanter declared.
Responding to the APC’s position, Mutfwang’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, denied any plans by the governor to join the APC.
Bere stressed that Mutfwang has widespread support across Plateau State and remains committed to his political base, asserting that the governor can secure victory in 2027 without switching parties.
The PDP in Plateau State also dismissed the defection claims as baseless. Southern Zonal Chairman Hon. Simon Domle described the APC’s claims as “empty” and emphasized that Mutfwang’s political strength lies in his achievements and governance record.
Meanwhile, Nentawe disclosed that Christian communities in northern Nigeria have decided to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 elections, citing improved representation and the administration’s performance over the past two years.
At the meeting, Plateau APC formally endorsed Tinubu for a second term, a move mirrored by party leaders in Kogi and Kaduna states.
Senator Simon Bako Lalong hailed Tinubu’s appointment of Nentawe as APC National Chairman as beneficial for Plateau, reflecting greater access to national development and opportunities for the state.
Nentawe further announced that Vice President Kashim Shettima will visit Plateau on October 30 to formally receive defectors from other political parties into the APC.
He added that more prominent figures from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and PDP are expected to join the APC, assuring that all newcomers will enjoy equal opportunities alongside long-standing party members.
The Plateau APC meeting underscored the party’s unity and readiness for the 2027 elections, even as speculation over political defections continues to dominate discussions in the state.
