Police Arrest Armed Robber While Robbing Victims In Anambra

(DDM) – The Anambra State Police Command has arrested an armed robbery suspect, identified as Nicholas Nweke, during an attempted robbery operation in Awka, the state capital.
Police authorities said the arrest followed a dramatic encounter in which one of the victims resisted the attack and raised alarm, drawing attention to the suspect’s activities.
According to the police, the incident occurred when Nicholas Nweke attempted to dispossess unsuspecting residents of their belongings while armed, creating fear and tension within the neighbourhood.
Eyewitnesses said the suspect approached his victims with threats and attempted to forcefully collect valuables, believing the victims would submit without resistance.
However, one of the victims reportedly fought back courageously, disrupting the robbery and attracting passersby and nearby residents to the scene.
The sudden resistance and public alarm forced the suspect into confusion, limiting his ability to escape.
Police operatives on patrol in the area swiftly responded to the distress call and moved in to secure the scene.
Officers arrested Nicholas Nweke on the spot and recovered items believed to have been used in carrying out the robbery.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody and undergoing interrogation.
Police sources said preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect may be linked to other robbery incidents within Awka and surrounding communities.
The command stated that investigators are working to determine whether Nweke acted alone or belonged to a wider criminal network operating in the state.
Anambra has, in recent months, witnessed intensified security operations as police and other agencies clamp down on violent crimes, including armed robbery, kidnapping, and cult-related violence.
The state police leadership has repeatedly assured residents of its commitment to maintaining law and order through proactive patrols and intelligence-led operations.
Security experts note that community cooperation has played a critical role in recent arrests, with residents increasingly willing to speak up and resist criminal elements.
The police command praised the bravery of the victim who resisted the robbery, describing the action as an example of responsible civic courage.
However, officers cautioned members of the public to always prioritize personal safety and report suspicious activities promptly rather than engaging criminals directly.
The command urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid isolated areas, and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely information.
Police authorities also encouraged the public to make use of emergency lines and community policing structures to enhance rapid response.
The arrest has reassured residents of Awka, many of whom have expressed renewed confidence in the police’s ability to tackle street crime.
Community leaders welcomed the development and called for sustained patrols to deter criminal activity, especially during festive periods when crime rates often rise.
The Anambra State Police Command reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on armed robbery and warned criminals that the state would remain hostile to illegal activities.
Officials confirmed that Nicholas Nweke will be charged to court upon completion of investigations.
The police assured the public that efforts to dismantle criminal networks across Anambra State would continue without compromise.
Residents have been advised to stay alert and support security agencies in keeping their communities safe.
