(DDM) – The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has apprehended a prominent masquerade leader identified as Uwem Umanah, over alleged involvement in criminal activities including public disturbance, highway blockage, and extortion in the state.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the suspect, who leads a cultural group locally known as Ekpo, was arrested following multiple complaints from residents of Abak Local Government Area about harassment and illegal toll collection by the group during traditional festivities.

Police sources said Umanah and his group allegedly mounted illegal roadblocks, demanding money from motorists and passersby under the guise of cultural celebration.

Community leaders in Abak have commended the police for their prompt response, saying the Ekpo group’s excesses had grown uncontrollable in recent weeks.

One resident, who identified himself as Mr. Ekanem, told DDM that “these masquerades block roads, beat people, and collect money by force. It has become a menace in our community.”
