The Nigerian Police on Monday reportedly arrested Aloy Ejimakor, counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, during a protest in Abuja.
Ejimakor confirmed his arrest in a post on his X handle, revealing that he was detained alongside several others participating in the peaceful #FreeNnamdiKanu demonstration.
“We’ve just been arrested. Myself, Prince Emanuel, Fine Boy, and others. We are at FCT Command CID, No. 1 Zaria Street, Garki 2, Abuja,” he wrote.
Earlier, Ejimakor accused the police of using teargas to disperse protesters who had gathered in the Federal Capital Territory to demand Kanu’s release. He said the security operatives’ actions left him with irritation in his eyes and throat.
The protest, which took place on Monday, was part of renewed calls by IPOB supporters and civil rights activists for the Nigerian government to obey court rulings ordering the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu.
Kanu has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021, despite several court decisions mandating his freedom.
His continued detention has drawn condemnation from rights groups, legal experts, and international observers who argue that it violates his fundamental rights.
As of the time of filing this report, police authorities had yet to issue an official statement regarding Ejimakor’s arrest or provide details on the charges against him and other detained protesters.
