Police Arrest Suspect in Viral Video Assaulting Woman Over Pot of Soup

UMUAHIA, Abia State — The Abia State Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old man, Agwu Ukpo, in connection with a viral video showing him assaulting a woman over a dispute involving a pot of soup, with the suspect now facing charges of assault and attempted murder.

The suspect, who hails from Akanu Ohafia in the Ohafia Local Government Area of the state, was apprehended by operatives of the command’s violent crime response unit. The arrest followed the circulation of a disturbing video on social media that captured the moment Ukpo physically attacked the woman in a dispute over a pot of soup, sparking widespread outrage among Nigerians.

According to a press release signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, the suspect will be charged to court upon the completion of investigations by the State Criminal Investigation Department. The police condemned the act, describing it as “brutal” and “inhumane,” and warned members of the public against all forms of domestic violence.

The command urged citizens to resolve disputes through peaceful means, emphasising that perpetrators of such acts would face the full wrath of the law. The statement reiterated the police’s commitment to protecting the rights and safety of all residents, particularly women and vulnerable individuals.

The incident has generated significant public concern, with many Nigerians taking to social media to express their outrage and call for justice for the victim. The video, which has been widely shared, has once again highlighted the prevalence of gender-based violence in Nigeria and the urgent need for stronger legal protections for victims.

The Abia State Police Command has been active in enforcing law and order across the state, with Commissioner of Police Danladi Isa previously reporting that the command arrested 809 suspects for various criminal offences between January and December 2025. The command has also intensified efforts to combat crimes against women and children, with over 30 cases of defilement recorded and prosecuted during the same period.
