Police authorities in Imo State have confirmed the arrest of a commercial motorcycle operator in the World Bank area of Owerri for allegedly aiding multiple kidnapping incidents.
The suspect, whose identity is yet to be made public, reportedly confessed to participating in several abductions around the World Bank axis and neighbouring communities.
SP Henry Okoye, the spokesman of the command, said operatives raided the suspect’s hideout in the World Bank area on Saturday and recovered “15 AK-47 rifles” along with other “dangerous ammunition”.
Residents of the area expressed relief following the arrest, describing it as a “major breakthrough” in the fight against insecurity in the commercial hub.
The police image maker clarified that the arrest was carried out by operatives from the Nigeria Police Force headquarters in Abuja.
“It is true that we are aware of the information, but it was police from Abuja headquarters that effected the arrest,” Okoye said.
“The command will look into the matter and ensure more arrests are made in connection with crimes in the area.”
He assured residents of the state that investigations are ongoing to dismantle a network linked to the suspect and recover additional arms and evidence.
