LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that the blast which occurred at the Oke-Afa Market in Mushin was a mechanical explosion, ruling out any possibility of terrorism or the use of explosives, according to the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin.
Hundeyin made the clarification on Thursday, following earlier reports that had suggested the blast could have been caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). He urged members of the public to disregard the speculation and to remain calm.
The explosion, which occurred on Monday, left one person injured and caused panic among traders and shoppers at the busy market. The injured victim has since been treated and discharged from the hospital, Hundeyin confirmed.
The police spokesperson explained that preliminary investigations conducted by the command’s explosive ordnance disposal unit revealed that the blast was caused by a mechanical fault in a parked vehicle. He noted that there was no evidence of an explosive device at the scene.
Hundeyin also appealed to residents to verify information before sharing it on social media to avoid spreading misinformation that could cause unnecessary panic and tension. He assured Lagosians that the police are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents.
The Lagos State Government has also issued a statement urging residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to the authorities. The government commended the police for their swift response and for providing timely clarification on the incident.
