The Lagos State Police Command has announced plans to arraign Shamsideen Adio, also known as Shameleon, a leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), over the alleged killing of a dispatch rider.
The incident occurred on September 17, 2025, following a violent altercation on Tapa Street, Lagos Island.
According to reports, the altercation began after the victim was accused of scratching Adio’s vehicle, which escalated into a brutal assault.
Eyewitnesses described the attack, stating that the rider was repeatedly struck with a helmet and fists until he collapsed. The rider was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Bababseyi Oluseyi, confirmed that Adio is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti-Yaba, and will be arraigned on Friday.
The Lagos State House of Assembly has condemned the incident, with Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, Adewale Adedeji, calling for the prosecution of Adio and his accomplices. Adedeji described the incident as “an act that must be condemned by every well-meaning Nigerian” and emphasized the importance of upholding the sanctity of human life.
The case is expected to serve as a lesson, and the police are working to ensure justice is served.
