Policemen in Abuja accused of extortion, threats of extrajudicial killing
DDM News

A disturbing report has surfaced on social media, alleging that officers of the Nigeria Police Force abducted and extorted a young man in Abuja.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the shocking claims were made by a user on X (formerly Twitter), who narrated how his younger brother was allegedly taken from his school and forced to pay ₦300,000 through a POS agent before being released.
The incident, which occurred in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was described as a “criminal operation” by men in uniform.
According to the X user, who operates with the handle @deyoppressed, the officers originally demanded ₦2 million from his younger brother.
He said they eventually settled for ₦300,000 after he failed to raise the full amount.
The man explained that despite pleading with the officers to reveal their location, they refused and instead issued threats to kill his brother or frame him for serious crimes.
He stated that the money was transferred to the police officers through a roadside POS agent, leaving a digital trail of the extortion.
He emphasized that the officers found nothing incriminating on his brother’s phone or person during the incident.
In a series of emotional posts, he accused the police of acting like “official kidnappers in uniform,” describing the entire ordeal as criminal and traumatizing.
He claimed the police refused to take his brother to any known station and warned him that refusal to comply would result in him burying his brother the following week.
He further described the officers’ threats as life-threatening, stating they had threatened to dump his brother’s body by the roadside if the money wasn’t paid.
The man openly tagged the official handle of the Nigeria Police Force and that of the Force PRO, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, calling for accountability.
He urged the police hierarchy to take immediate action and stop the criminal activities of their operatives.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the Nigeria Police Force regarding the incident.
The incident adds to the growing number of public complaints about extrajudicial activities by law enforcement officers in Nigeria.
In a similar case just two weeks ago, two siblings, Allwell and Chinonso Amaobi, were allegedly extorted by plain-clothed police officers in Rivers State.
That incident involved over ₦832,000 and $1,500 in extorted funds, reportedly taken in an unmarked Sienna van during a night stop.
Many Nigerians continue to express fear and frustration over the unchecked abuses by officers who are supposed to protect citizens.
Despite repeated assurances from police authorities to address these issues, incidents of police extortion and abuse persist nationwide.
Calls for urgent reform of the police force have intensified, with many demanding internal surveillance, body cameras, and criminal prosecution of errant officers.
