Former Abia State Governor and Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu, has claimed that the recent surge in killings and abductions across the country is politically motivated, alleging it is part of a deliberate effort to destabilize President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He said this while speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.
Kalu argued that the pattern of attacks points to a calculated agenda rather than random criminal acts.
Kalu declined to name those he believes are behind the violence but suggested that similar tactics were used to undermine former President Goodluck Jonathan.
“What we are seeing is routine—something that happens with elections. When you have an election, people try to pressure the government in power for all kinds of things to start happening. You can remember when President Jonathan was here, a similar thing happened,” he said.
He further alleged that both local and foreign actors are fueling the current wave of insecurity, claiming their goal is to destabilize the government.
“The terrorists and bandits are orchestrated by some members of the international community and local people who want to destabilize the government,” he stated, adding that the insecurity appears linked to political manoeuvring ahead of the next election cycle.
Despite the challenges, Kalu expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s approach to tackling the crisis, highlighting that the President had canceled official engagements to focus on security issues.
“For the first time, you see the president canceling all his engagements. Today is Sunday, and he faced everything about security,” Kalu said.
He assured Nigerians that efforts are underway to rescue abducted victims, including recently kidnapped schoolgirls, and emphasized that the government is working diligently to address the situation.
“Those girls will be recovered. The government is making every effort to make sure these people are recovered,” he said, acknowledging that the country is facing a difficult period.
