Power brokers plot 2027 chess moves — COPDEM tells Nigerians: Focus on Obi, ignore distractions
DDM News

(DDM) – The Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) has called on Nigerians to remain resolute in the quest for a new Nigeria built on transparency, equity, and justice, urging citizens not to be swayed by ongoing political manoeuvres among power brokers ahead of the 2027 elections.
DDM gathered that the call follows recent media reports about shifting alliances and political intrigues involving former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and other influential figures.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the COPDEM National Media Team, the group warned that these developments were designed to distract citizens from the transformative agenda championed by Mr. Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate.
COPDEM emphasised that the current political climate was being deliberately muddied by entrenched interests seeking to maintain Nigeria’s status quo of poor governance and economic stagnation.
The statement noted that Nigerians must resist any attempt to derail the people-focused movement that has been gaining momentum nationwide since the 2023 general elections.
According to COPDEM, Obi represents a shift from transactional politics to service-oriented leadership, one that prioritises human capital development, institutional reforms, and national unity over the personal ambitions of political elites.
The group warned that power blocs with vested interests were already deploying misinformation, distractions, and political baiting to weaken the resolve of the masses.
“Nigerians must understand that these games are not about the people; they are about preserving the old order,” the statement read.
It stressed that the movement for a better Nigeria transcends individual personalities and should be anchored on principles that guarantee sustainable development and genuine democracy.
COPDEM urged its supporters and all Nigerians to focus on grassroots mobilisation, voter education, and peaceful advocacy ahead of 2027, rather than becoming entangled in elite political chess moves.
“Let no one lose sight of the goal,” the statement continued. “Our goal is to reclaim Nigeria from the hands of those who have normalised corruption, mismanagement, and divisive politics.”
The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside other pro-democracy movements, civil society groups, and reform-minded citizens to ensure that Nigerians have a credible alternative in the next general elections.
It also reminded citizens that the task of nation-building requires unity, vigilance, and an unshakable belief in the possibility of change, regardless of the schemes playing out among career politicians.
COPDEM concluded by calling on all Nigerians to channel their energy into constructive political engagement that will lead to the emergence of a leadership committed to the welfare of all citizens, as embodied in the vision and values espoused by Peter Obi.
