The Presidency has strongly rejected suggestions that Nigeria is on the brink of collapse, calling such claims exaggerated and misleading.
In a statement on Thursday, Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communications, criticised a recent editorial titled “Nigeria is Collapsing under Tinubu’s Watch.”
He said the article misrepresented the country’s economic situation and fuelled unnecessary public despair.
Dare acknowledged that Nigeria faces economic challenges.
However, he stressed that the reality is far from the grim picture painted by critics.
He insisted that the claim that 33 million Nigerians face imminent hunger is a projection, not an established fact.
“The figure is based on forecasts from the Cadre Harmonisé report, a regional tool for predicting food insecurity. It does not mean the situation has already happened,” Dare explained.
He welcomed constructive criticism but warned against what he described as “alarmist journalism.”
According to him, national discourse should be rooted in facts, not fear.
Dare also outlined the Tinubu administration’s interventions aimed at easing hardship.
These include releasing grains from national reserves, expanding agricultural production, and providing direct cash transfers to vulnerable households.
On the economy, he pointed to recent gains in the naira-dollar exchange rate.
He also noted that ongoing tax reforms and social policy adjustments are expected to deliver more positive results by 2026.
“The government is implementing deliberate strategies to stabilise the economy and improve the lives of Nigerians,” Dare said.
He added that portraying the country as collapsing undermines investor confidence and public morale.
The statement reflects the administration’s determination to counter negative narratives and reassure citizens that economic reforms are on track.
While challenges remain, the Presidency maintains that Nigeria’s future is far from the doomsday scenarios painted by some commentators.
