ASABA, Delta State — Nigerian aviation authorities have launched multiple investigations after a private jet made an emergency landing on a roadway connected to the Second Niger Bridge bypass access route before later departing the scene without obtaining regulatory clearance, an incident officials have described as a serious breach of aviation procedures.
The aircraft involved, a Bombardier Challenger CL-601 business jet registered N989BC and operated by VMO Aero Limited, was flying from Lagos to Asaba on June 10 when it encountered difficulties while attempting to land at Asaba International Airport. According to preliminary reports, the crew aborted their initial landing attempt and subsequently executed an emergency landing on a section of the bypass access road near Ogwashi-Uku in Delta State.
Authorities confirmed that four crew members were aboard the aircraft at the time of the incident and that no passengers were on board. All occupants exited safely, with no injuries reported. The unexpected landing drew immediate attention from aviation regulators and security agencies, given the unusual nature of a jet aircraft touching down on a public roadway.
Investigations later revealed that several hours after the emergency landing, the aircraft departed the location and returned to Lagos without receiving the necessary regulatory approvals. Officials said Air Traffic Control was informed only after the aircraft had already become airborne, raising concerns about compliance with established aviation safety procedures.
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) responded by grounding the aircraft upon its arrival in Lagos and initiating a comprehensive review of the operator’s activities. The authority also moved to suspend the company’s Permit for Non-Commercial Flight pending further examination of its operational, maintenance, and safety records.
NCAA officials described the unauthorised departure as a violation of existing aviation regulations and confirmed that the flight crew are under regulatory review while investigators determine the circumstances surrounding both the emergency landing and subsequent takeoff. The authority stressed that strict adherence to aviation rules is essential to maintaining safety and public confidence in the sector.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has meanwhile commenced a full-scale probe into the occurrence. Investigators were dispatched to the site shortly after the incident and have recovered the aircraft’s Cockpit Voice Recorder and Flight Data Recorder. The devices are expected to provide crucial information regarding the aircraft’s operations, communications, and technical performance before and during the incident.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, ordered an extensive investigation and described the aircraft’s departure without clearance as a significant regulatory and security concern. Security agencies have also taken the crew into custody as inquiries continue.
The incident has generated widespread discussion within Nigeria’s aviation community, with experts noting that emergency landings on roadways are exceptionally rare and that departures from such locations ordinarily require extensive safety assessments and regulatory approvals.
Authorities have assured the public that all aspects of the occurrence will be thoroughly examined and that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.
