The Presidency has dismissed calls for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the proscribed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), saying protests and threats won’t influence President Bola Tinubu’s decision.
Presidential spokesman Sunday Dare accused protesters, including Omoyele Sowore, of undermining the rule of law.
Dare stated that protests, threats, and inflammatory rhetoric don’t aid the judicial process, instead creating unnecessary tension and undermining the rule of law.
He emphasized that matters of justice are resolved in courts, not on the streets, and urged protesters to allow the judiciary to do its work without interference.
Dare reiterated President Tinubu’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice is served fairly and transparently.
Kanu has been in detention since 2021, facing terrorism charges after being abducted from Kenya and returned to Nigeria during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime.
