PSC Chairman calls for overhaul of obsolete intelligence gathering methods

The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd, mni), has emphasized the need for a paradigm shift in the way information and intelligence are gathered in Nigeria.

Speaking at the Nigeria Police Force Youth Summit to commemorate the 2024 International Youth Day in Abuja, DIG Argungu stressed that traditional methods of intelligence gathering have become obsolete and ineffective in today’s digital world.

The PSC Chairman noted that the old Police regulations are uncertain, obsolete, and struggling to keep up with technological advancements. He highlighted the importance of recognizing offenses committed through computers and the need for electronic evidence collection and preservation in the 21st century.

DIG Argungu urged the Summit to suggest and recommend innovative strategies for addressing emerging issues, emphasizing the need for anticipation, quick action, and maximization of success chances. He emphasized that globalization, digitalization, and computerization have transformed intelligence gathering, making it more electronically based and technology-driven.

The PSC Chairman underscored the significance of youth input, stating that their contributions are crucial for the nation’s success. He commended the theme of the Summit, “Enhancing Nigerian Youth Value for National Security Intelligence,” as timely and relevant to global discussions on security and safety.

DIG Argungu also identified major challenges facing Nigerian youths, including an ineffective educational system, unemployment, poverty, lack of jobs, ignorance, and non-functional education. He emphasized the need for collective efforts to address these issues and ensure a safer and more secure Nigeria.

The Summit, designed for core stakeholders, aimed to explore ways to attain security and safety in Nigeria through the empowerment of youths. The PSC Chairman’s call for an overhaul of obsolete intelligence gathering methods resonated throughout the event, emphasizing the need for innovation and adaptation in today’s digital landscape.
