Paris Saint-Germain moved to the top of Ligue 1 after securing a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Olympique Lyonnais at the Parc des Princes on Monday, October 26, with second-half goals from Senny Mayulu and Mika Godts extending the champions’ winning run to eight matches across all competitions.

The French champions entered the contest knowing that victory would take them above their rivals in the league standings, but Lyon proved difficult to break down during a competitive first half. PSG eventually found their breakthrough through substitute Mayulu before Godts delivered the decisive second goal to secure three valuable points.

The result lifted PSG to 17 points from eight matches, one point ahead of second-placed Rennes. Lyon remained fifth on 14 points after missing the opportunity to climb to the summit themselves.

The hosts also had to contend with a dangerous Lyon side that threatened to disrupt their ambitions early in the game. PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov was called into action during the first half, producing an outstanding save to deny Julien Duranville and prevent the visitors from taking the lead.

The intervention proved important as Lyon looked capable of making the most of their opportunities. While PSG sought to establish control, the visitors remained organised defensively and made it difficult for the hosts to create the clear-cut chances required to break the deadlock.

Despite PSG’s attacking quality, the first half ended without a goal, leaving the contest finely balanced heading into the interval.

The match also carried an emotional moment before kick-off, as PSG supporters paid tribute to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who was undergoing surgery in Qatar following a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

After the restart, PSG continued searching for a breakthrough against Lyon’s stubborn defence. With the game still goalless, the hosts needed greater attacking sharpness, and their substitutions eventually proved decisive.

72nd minute: Senny Mayulu breaks the deadlock

PSG finally found the breakthrough in the 72nd minute through Mayulu, who had entered the match as a substitute.

The goal came after Mika Godts supplied a pass to Mayulu on the edge of the penalty area. The midfielder took a touch to create the opportunity before drilling a low shot into the left corner of the net, giving the Lyon goalkeeper little chance to prevent the opener.

It was a significant moment for the 20-year-old, who scored his first goal since April. More importantly, his composed finish rewarded PSG’s persistence and gave the hosts the advantage they had struggled to find during the opening stages.

The goal forced Lyon to reconsider their approach, with the visitors now needing to push forward in search of an equaliser. However, that also created opportunities for PSG to exploit the spaces left behind.

Late in the match: Mika Godts seals the victory

Godts subsequently ensured that PSG would collect all three points by scoring his first goal for the club following his arrival from Ajax Amsterdam earlier in the season.

The Belgian winger capitalised on a long pass, advanced into a dangerous position and fired home from the edge of the penalty area to double PSG’s advantage.

His finish removed any lingering uncertainty surrounding the result and capped an influential performance from a player who had already played a decisive role in Mayulu’s opener.

With two second-half goals separating the sides, PSG had turned a difficult contest into a valuable victory. The hosts demonstrated the importance of patience and effective substitutions, finding the breakthrough when Lyon’s defensive resistance finally gave way.

The result extended PSG’s winning streak to eight matches in all competitions and marked their fifth consecutive victory in Ligue 1, underlining their growing momentum in the title race.

For Lyon, the defeat was a frustrating setback. They had remained competitive for much of the encounter and created a first-half opportunity that required an excellent save from Safonov, but they could not maintain their resistance once PSG found the opening goal.

The victory also came on an important evening for the Parisian club, coinciding with the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, where PSG had a record 10 players nominated across various awards.

Ultimately, Mayulu and Godts provided the decisive contributions as PSG secured a 2-0 win that sent them to the top of Ligue 1 for the first time this season. With 17 points from eight matches, the defending champions now have the advantage over Rennes, although the title race remains open.

Their immediate task will be to maintain that momentum as the season progresses, while Lyon must respond quickly if they are to remain within touching distance of the leading positions.
