9 man PSG knock out Bayern Munich in FIFA Club World Cup

Paris Saint-Germain took another stride toward global supremacy with a gripping 2-0 win over Bayern Munich in the Club World Cup quarterfinals on Saturday, July 5, 2025.

However, the victory was overshadowed by a shocking injury to young German sensation Jamal Musiala.

Playing in front of a packed crowd in Atlanta on Saturday night, the Champions League holders looked every bit like title contenders.

Desire Doue broke the deadlock in the 78th minute before Ousmane Dembélé sealed the result deep into stoppage time, despite PSG being reduced to nine men in a frantic final stretch.

But the most chilling moment came late in the first half when Musiala suffered what appeared to be a severe ankle fracture in a freak collision with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

As the 22-year-old Bayern star chased a loose ball near the byline in stoppage time, Donnarumma charged out and dived to smother it, only to crash straight into Musiala’s outstretched leg.

The German midfielder immediately went down, his foot twisted grotesquely.

The stadium fell into stunned silence as medics rushed in with a stretcher.

While Donnarumma had initially walked away with the ball, he turned back, saw the injury, and immediately dropped to his knees in disbelief.

The Italian keeper appeared visibly shaken and was booed by Bayern fans every time he touched the ball in the second half.

Up until that point, both teams had shown flashes of brilliance.

Donnarumma had already delivered two first-half saves to keep PSG level, diving right to stop Michael Olise and later stretching left to deny Aleksandar Pavlović, who nearly found Musiala with a sharp cross.

Bayern’s legendary shot-stopper Manuel Neuer was equally alert, blocking a close-range effort from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the 32nd minute.

Also, Neuer dived left to parry a breakaway chance by Bradley Barcola early in the second half.

But PSG, who recently demolished Inter Milan 5-0 to win their first-ever Champions League title, turned on the jets in the final 15 minutes.

The breakthrough came when João Neves dispossessed Harry Kane near the halfway line and launched a rapid counterattack.

After a slick exchange, the ball returned to Neves, who spotted Doue just outside the area.

The French winger unleashed a clever left-footed shot that slipped past Neuer, catching him flat-footed.

However, PSG’s celebrations were short-lived as the match descended into chaos.

Defender Willian Pacho received a straight red in the 82nd minute for a reckless challenge on Thomas Müller.

Just minutes later, Lucas Hernandez was also sent off for elbowing Raphaël Guerreiro in the face, leaving the French side with nine players.

Bayern, sensing opportunity, pushed everything forward. They even found the back of the net twice—once through Kane—but both goals were chalked off for offside.

The German giants threw players forward in a desperate bid for an equalizer, but that left them exposed.

Enter Achraf Hakimi.

In a moment of brilliance, the Moroccan full-back weaved past three defenders on a lightning-fast counter and squared it to Dembélé.

The winger made no mistake, slamming a low, first-time shot past Neuer to make it 2-0 in the dying seconds.

Bayern thought they had one last lifeline when they were awarded a penalty in stoppage time, but after a VAR review, the decision was reversed, adding to their frustration.

After the final whistle, PSG captain Marquinhos praised the team’s grit.

“It’s never easy playing with two men down, but we showed incredible fight and unity,” he told DAZN.

“That second goal was massive. In a competition like this, every moment counts.”

Hakimi echoed the sentiment.

“We beat one of the strongest teams in the world today,” he said.

“This was a true team performance against a big rival.

“We did exactly what was needed to advance.”

PSG will now face either Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund in the semifinals on Wednesday in New Jersey, a match that promises to be another blockbuster.

But questions remain over Musiala’s condition, and whether Bayern can recover from a night that saw their hopes, and one of their brightest stars, crushed in brutal fashion.
