Rangers International will turn their attention to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title race when they travel to Port Harcourt to face Rivers United on Sunday, November 1, following their painful elimination from the CAF Champions League.

The defending Nigerian champions will be eager to put their continental disappointment behind them when they take on the league leaders at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in a crucial Matchday 11 encounter.

Rangers suffered a dramatic 3-2 aggregate defeat to Algerian side MC Alger in the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League, ending their hopes of reaching the competition’s group stage.

Despite securing a 2-0 victory in the first leg at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta, the Enugu-based club failed to protect their advantage in the return fixture in Algiers.

MC Alger overturned the deficit with three second-half goals to secure a 3-0 victory on the night and progress with a 3-2 aggregate win.

The defeat brought Rangers’ continental campaign to an abrupt end, leaving Fidelis Ilechukwu’s men with the domestic league as their immediate focus.

The club has already signalled its determination to move forward, announcing that attention has shifted to the upcoming encounter against Rivers United.

Rangers stated that their quest for three crucial points would continue as they prepare for the trip to Port Harcourt.

However, their next assignment presents a significant challenge against a Rivers United side determined to maintain its position at the top of the NPFL standings.

Rivers United currently lead the table with 17 points from 10 matches, while Rangers also have 17 points despite having played two fewer games.

The Flying Antelopes therefore have an opportunity to strengthen their title ambitions, with their outstanding fixtures potentially giving them an advantage in the race for the top position.

Rivers United, meanwhile, will be keen to respond positively after suffering their first league defeat of the season against Bendel Insurance.

The Pride of Rivers lost 2-1 in Benin City on October 25, ending their nine-match unbeaten run in the league.

Freeman Wuchirwe opened the scoring for Bendel Insurance in the 48th minute before Rivers United forward Chijioke Mbaoma restored parity in the 73rd minute.

Jonathan James subsequently scored an 89th-minute winner to secure all three points for the hosts and leave Rivers United facing the prospect of a difficult response against the defending champions.

Despite that setback, Rivers United retained their position at the summit with 17 points, keeping them level on points with Rangers and Nasarawa United.

Sunday’s encounter could therefore have significant implications for the early-season title race, particularly with both clubs eager to establish themselves as leading contenders.

For Rangers, victory would provide an important response to their continental disappointment while strengthening their position in the domestic competition.

For Rivers United, securing maximum points at home would help them consolidate their position at the top and prevent their closest challengers from gaining ground.

With both sides level on points and Rangers holding two games in hand, the encounter promises to be a closely contested battle between two clubs with strong ambitions for the season.

Rangers must now demonstrate that their disappointment in Algeria will not derail their domestic campaign, while Rivers United will be determined to ensure their recent defeat does not trigger a decline in form.

The outcome could provide an early indication of which side is better positioned to sustain a serious challenge for the NPFL title.

Further team news, including confirmed line-ups and any injury updates ahead of Sunday’s fixture, had not been established in the reports reviewed.
