Nigerians from various walks of life have questioned the rationale behind the trail burial of Chief (Mrs) Zainab Marwa (Nee Salome Chioma Agbaso), the wife of the Chairman and Chief Executive of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd).
A statement by the family on Saturday, January 8, 2022, said Mrs. Marwa died in the early hours of the day at the age of 66 after a brief illness.
General Marwa, a former Lagos State Governor, hails from Adamawa State but was born in Kaduna in a military family, after his father, Buba Marwa, and grandfather, Buba Yola, had also served in the Nigeria Army.
As a Muslim, it was expected that the late wife would be buried within twenty-four hours according to Islamic rites.
Also, it was expected that General Marwa would bury his late wife at a place of his choice, possibly in his Adamawa hometown.

Those, however, were not to be as she was buried three weeks later on Saturday, January the 29th, at her father’s compound in Owerri, lmo State!
Reacting, some Nigerians, especially Muslims faithfuls, have wondered why she was buried that way in violation of Islamic practices, worse yet, in the absence of her husband.
One such observer, who wrote in a WhatsApp group, asked:
“May her soul rest in peace. Why bury her in Imo instead of Adamawa?
“And no presence of her husband? Abi dem quarrel reach death?”
Responding, another observer stated:
“I think that you lack deep knowledge and understanding of Igbo culture and tradition.
“As an “ada” (first daughter), Mrs Marwa is entitled to be taken back and buried in her fathers house especially if it is her personal wish. I am sure you have no idea about this great Igbo tradition and honour.
“You are so short sighted and have reduced this burial to quarrel and presence of her husband.
“For the record – Late Chief (Mrs) Zainab Marwa (Nee Salome Chioma Agbaso) was given a very befitting burial by her husband and four (4) children and ten (10) grandchildren
“Her husband – Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd) was in the funeral requiem mass held at her church: Pro-Cathedral Catholic Church in Area 3 in Abuja with her four accomplished children and ten grandchildren.
“The family, friends and associates were equally at her Service of Songs in Abuja that was attended by who is who in the society.
“Her body was finally buried in Owerri, Imo State, yesterday. l am part of this beautiful family and was part of the funeral activities.”
Among those present were members of the Society for Women Mentoring and Advancement (SWOMAAD) led by its National President, Hon. Princess Nikky Onyeri.
Princess Onyeri condoled with Barr. Zainab Marwa-Abubakar, daughter of the deceased and a SWOMAAD member, as the body of the SWOMAAD founding member, matron, mother, grandmother, Late Chief (Mrs) Zainab Marwa was laid to rest in Owerri.
