ElombahNews is in possession of data which shows that Nigeria generates very poor revenue from cattle business despite heavy activity in the business, as well as federal government interventions in its activities.
The makers of the report noted, amongst other things, that the reason is because Nigerian herders do not deploy technology in the production and/or harvesting of diary products.
The report said, rather, that the owners of the business, the Fulanis, deploy the crudest form of cattle rearing which is the nomadic style while running “cattle colonies” or engaging in “primitive cattle grazing”.
This, it said subjects the animals to disease, poor production, ill health, lack of medical attention, and other vices, to mention but few.
Among other additional considerations, it showed that other countries generate massive revenue because of the more modern ranching style to maximise production and profit and rendering proper care to the animals.
This, the report says, does not exclude the use of technological advancements in operating the business.
The document titled “Global cattle business fact sheet” shows that:
- Nigeria is not among the top 20 nations in the global cattle business.
- None of the top cattle producing nations create cattle colonies or engage in primitive cattle grazing.
- All the top cattle producing and exporting nations utilise modern technology and ranching methods to maximise production and profit.

An economic analyst who drew the attention of ElombahNews to the report blamed Nigeria for its poor output despite being in position to rank high among its contemporaries.
While showering praises on the top nations earning billions of dollars annually from the cattle business, he regretted the killing of citizens for cattle as witnessed almost on daily basis in the country.
He stressed that Nigeria’s cattle business requires a complete overhaul now to improve the lot of both those behind the business and the long-term interest of the business.
The expert noted with disdain that hides of cattle are consumed as delicacy in Nigeria while in other countries they are taken straight to factories for development into shoes and bags.
