A retired Superintendent of the Nigerian Police Force has cried out in frustration after learning that his total pension entitlement is only ₦2 million, despite serving the country for 35 years.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the heartbreaking revelation was shared via X (formerly Twitter) by a user identified as @ChuksEricE, who posted a video of the retired officer expressing his disappointment and disbelief.

In the video, the officer, who officially retired on October 1, 2023, explained that he received no payments for several months after his retirement.

According to him, he was recently contacted by officials who informed him that he would receive a total of ₦3 million.

However, the breakdown of the payment left him shocked.

“I retired from the Nigerian Police on October 1, 2023. Since then, nothing was paid to me,” he said. “Just two weeks ago, they called and said they’re going to pay me ₦3 million.

I asked what it was for, and they said ₦1 million is my arrears and ₦2 million is my pension.”

Expressing disbelief, he continued, “I can’t serve this country for a good 35 years and be paid ₦2 million. The devil is a liar.”

The video has since gone viral, sparking outrage and heated debate across social media.

While many Nigerians expressed sympathy and called for pension reform, others were less empathetic, citing longstanding grievances with the police force.

One user wrote: “Which useless service did he provide? Is it this police that has destroyed democracy?” Another added, “When citizens protest, you shoot at them. Now you want pity.”

The situation has renewed calls for the federal government and the Inspector General of Police to review the treatment of retired officers and ensure that those who have served the nation receive fair and dignified retirement benefits.
