Rivers protesters vandalize Wike’s billboards, block roads ahead of visit

Tension has escalated in Rivers State as residents protest against Nyesom Wike’s planned visit to Abalama in Asari-Toru.

The former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was scheduled to attend a thanksgiving service.

Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that the event also included a civic reception in his honor, but it has been met with strong opposition.

King Dr. A. B. Big Tom Tom JP, the paramount ruler of Abalama, rejected the planned gathering.

He sent a letter to the Rivers State Commissioner of Police on March 12, 2025, citing security concerns.

The monarch expressed shock upon discovering the event’s announcement on Facebook despite being the traditional leader of the community.

He stated that he and his council of chiefs had earlier banned political activities in Abalama.

He emphasized that the decision was necessary due to the ongoing political tensions in Rivers State.

A public radio announcement was made to reinforce the ban on political gatherings within the community.

Despite this, plans for Wike’s visit continued, sparking widespread protests among residents.

Videos circulating on social media show men, women, and youths marching with placards.

Protesters were heard chanting slogans rejecting Wike’s presence in their community.

Some demonstrators took further action by blocking major roads, restricting movement in the area.

The protesters accused Wike of undermining the Kalabari people by referring to them as a minority in Rivers State.

They declared that he would not be allowed to step into Abalama under any circumstances.

This protest occurs amid an ongoing political feud between Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The rivalry between the two politicians has fueled tension and division across the state.

Their political battle has led to public outbursts, accusations, and deepening conflicts among their supporters.

Observers warn that the growing unrest could escalate into a broader crisis if left unchecked.
