At least 14 wedding guests have died in a tragic road accident that cast a pall of grief over Umuahia, Abia State, over the weekend.

The victims were returning from a traditional marriage and wedding ceremony in Enugu when the coaster bus conveying them collided head-on with an articulated vehicle along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway near the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital.

How the crash occurred

Eyewitnesses said the accident happened around 6 p.m. on Saturday, a few metres from the popular 4-Corner Junction. Fourteen passengers reportedly died on the spot, while others later succumbed to injuries in hospital. Several survivors remain hospitalised in Umuahia.

Preliminary accounts suggested the bus was allegedly driving against traffic while the trailer attempted to overtake a tricycle, resulting in the fatal collision.

Traders among victims

Most of the deceased were foodstuff traders operating at Bonny Street, by Owerri Road near Isi Gate in Umuahia. The groom, MacDonald Okechukwu, an indigene of Orlu, was reportedly among traders in the area. His bride is from Amagunze, where the wedding ceremonies were held.

A popular event host known as MC Counsellor, who anchored the wedding, was also among the victims.

Families recount losses

Miss Glory Chiamaka Orji, 27, who lost her father in the crash, said the family remained in shock.

Another trader disclosed that at least eight Bonny Street traders died, adding that one survivor in a coma lost both her mother and brother-in-law.

Medical response and appeal for support

Chairman of Bonny Street Traders Association, James Edeh, confirmed that 12 bodies were evacuated initially, while two remained in Enugu for identification. Several injured victims are receiving treatment in private hospitals in Umuahia, with others admitted at the Federal Orthopaedic Hospital in Enugu.
