RSG To Intensify Investment In Education Sector – Governor Wike
Rivers State Governor , Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has stated that his administration will intensify investments in the education sector because it is the fastest way to empower the youths of the state .
In an address to the 33rd and 34th Combined Convocation of the Ignatius Ajuri University of Education in Port Harcourt on Saturday , Governor Wike said that his administration’s investment in the education sector have led to sustained improvement of learning infrastructure across the state .
He said : “We shall increase the level of funding in the next fiscal year to enable the University to overcome some of its critical challenges in infrastructure, staff development, and students’ welfare.
“Of course, the State Government alone cannot meet the funding needs of its tertiary institutions. We therefore expect the University to seriously explore alternative sources of funding to augment the inevitable funding gaps from the State Government and other public funding sources.”
The governor who was represented by the State Education Commissioner , Professor Kaniye Ebeku commended the Management of Ignatius Ajuri University of Education for working to secure accreditation of courses run in the institution and improving critical infrastructure .
The governor said : “Besides achieving full accreditation for all the programmes of the University with the National Universities Commission, the present management has ensured industrial harmony as well as delivered on key infrastructural projects among several other achievements.
“We are quite happy with the developmental strides and ongoing improvements in the University and commend the management for living up to the expectations of the stakeholders, including the staff and students.”
Governor Wike charged the fresh graduates to put the knowledge gained in the course of their academic pursuit to good use, especially at this time when the country is facing economic crisis .
“But the prevailing economic gloom shouldn’t discourage you and your vision for the future. Remember that things usually have a way of working out for those who strive. Therefore, you must take your destiny into your own hands and become the architects of your future by creatively finding your ways into viable ventures and career paths in the public and private spheres or in self-employment”, he told the graduands .
In his address , the Vice Chancellor of the Ignatius Ajuri University of Education , Prof Joseph Kinanee commended Governor Wike for the increased funding of the university which has led to the development of required educational infrastructure .
He said that these infrastructure helped the university in getting full accreditation for all her academic programmes .
The Vice Chancellor added that the governor as Minister of State for Education attracted several projects also used to get courses accredited in the institution .
Pro-Chancellor of the University, King AM Ikuru assured the governor that the council will pay due attention to its responsibilities for the growth of the institution.
Highpoint of the occasion was the commissioning of the Administrative Block of the University by the representative of the Governor .
The 33rd & 34th Combined Convocation of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education witnessed 3,334 graduands receiving various degrees, diplomas and certificates.
