Russian General Killed in Car Bomb Attack in Moscow

A Russian general, Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, was killed on Monday morning in Moscow after an explosive device planted under his vehicle detonated, officials have confirmed.

Sarvarov, 56, headed the armed forces’ operational training department.

The Investigative Committee of Russia has opened probes into murder and illegal trafficking of explosives.

The bomb exploded in a car park near an apartment block in southern Moscow, leaving Sarvarov critically injured. He later died in hospital.

Sarvarov is the third senior military official killed in Moscow in the past year, following targeted attacks on Gen. Igor Kirillov in December 2024 and Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik in April 2025.

Darya Dugina, the daughter of a Putin ally, was also killed in a car bombing in 2022.

Russian authorities are investigating a possible link to Ukrainian intelligence, though Ukraine has not officially commented.

Sarvarov had previously participated in the Ossetian-Ingush conflict, the Chechen wars, and led operations in Syria between 2015 and 2016.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that President Vladimir Putin was immediately informed of Sarvarov’s death.

Investigators were dispatched to the scene to assess the damage and gather evidence.
